Environmental Risk Assessment
Similar to health and safety requirements, there is a need to provide an environmental risk assessment, to determine the hazards and their associated control measures. This is achieved by a site tour, and a calculation of the observed and projected risk to the environment.
One of the main ways to prevent Environmental hazards is to control the types and quantities of hazardous substances allowed onto site or stored. Although certain substances are used continually these substances are regulated. A register is maintained as to the quantities used.
All materials are delivered to a manned secured site, and secured in a locked store. Within the store there is a locked steel cupboard, which contains hazardous substances. Every hazardous substance displays the essential environmental, health and safety information on it, in the form of standardised container labels. Where appropriate the containers will also display the hazardous diamonds.
Loading and unloading is carried out in a secure compound, which is monitored by CCTV. Hazardous substances are transported in containers, which are marked stating the contents. These containers are placed in storage areas within the vehicle, which reduces the movement of the containers, thus reducing accidental breakages and spillages.
The storage site is a purpose built storage company, all areas are monitored by and internal/external CCTV system which is 24 hours a day 365 days per year by a reputable/ registered private security company.
Spills will be mopped up with appropriate spills kits, this applies to storage are and company vehicle. All spills and leaks must be recorded as non-injury accidents. We do not store combustibles liquids.
Enviropest can confirm that all our rodenticides and insecticides are sourced from reputable suppliers; these materials are registered with the HSE, Health & Safety Executive. Who issues a unique registration no, which is used for identification and auditing purposes. Materials used to control insects in organic environments do not contain an insecticide therefore they are not classified as pesticides, which means they do not require registration.
Arrangements have been put into place to enable the recycling of certain hazardous substances and there containers, and also non- hazardous materials such as paper, cardboard and glass containers. Increasingly, this aspect is coming under European directives to reduce, recycle and re-used materials. All hazardous waste is sent to Killgerm Controlled and Special Waste Disposal Services.
All training involved with environmental issues will be given appropriate training. In particular the management team will attend an environmental (in house) awareness-training course.
Enviropest Control Services will set the scope concentrating on one area at time, identifying the impacts and working towards continuous improvement to seek to protect the environment with prudent use of finite nature recourses.
This policy will be implemented within the framework of an Environmental Management System designed to meet the requirements of BS 8555 which the organisation will seek certification by September 2009, using the approach implemented.
